About One Young World

The annual One Young World Summit is attended by the brightest young talent from global and national companies of every sector such as non-governmental organisations (NGOs), universities and other forward-thinking organisations as well as influential political, business, sport and humanitarian world leaders. Past speakers have included Kofi Annan, Arianna Huffington, Emma Watson, Justin Trudeau, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson, Sol Campbell, Sir Bob Geldof, Akon, Richard Branson and Ellie Goulding. Mary Helda Akongo and Caroline Casey, keynote speakers of the OYW Summit came to the University of Bath in 2019 for our OYW Caucus.

Delegate Cicely

As the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences representative to the summit, Cicely commented: 'What I really love about OYW is that it aims to empower younger people to be at the forefront of positive social change. Experienced leaders, who have already paved the way for positive social change, will be teaching and inspiring younger people to do the same. So, the fact that the Summit is giving younger people the confidence and opportunity to voice their own ideas is truly special, and I feel so honoured and excited to be a part of this movement that OYW has created.'

Delegate Laura

In addition, Laura said: 'It’s sometimes easy to feel like there is no hope when there are so many issues deeply rooted within our society but what I am expecting from the summit is to be reassured that our future is bright. Almost 2000 young people will be listening to other young leaders and global changemakers presenting their experiences and their solutions; I can’t wait to share some of the innovative ways that mean we can all work together to change the world for the better.'

One Young World at Bath

For several years, the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences has been supporting students to attend this incredible summit, and for the first time the School of Management takes part in this. The summit is designed specifically for young leaders to focus on global issues, which this year includes human rights and humanity, plastic pollution, health, education, climate change, inequality, peace, poverty alleviation, global markets, sustainable future and economic development . These issues align closely with the teaching and research which takes place across the University.

Over the last three years, our delegates have gone on to produce their own One Young World Bath events which have included speakers from the international event and the University's academic experts. They have led projects of their own to make a positive impact on their community. This year, Cicely has decided to focus on Mental Health and Laura is concentrating on food waste.
