Paper by computer science academic meets the ‘test of time’

Professor Guy McCusker has won the 2018 IEEE–LICS Test-of-Time Award for his paper on mathematical modelling of powerful programming language features.

The Logic in Computer Science (LICS) Test-of-Time Award recognises a small number of papers from LICS conferences held between 1988 and 2008, that have best met the “test of time".

The winning paper was selected by an awards committee because of the influence it has had since first being published in 1998.

The paper called ‘A fully abstract game semantics of general references’ was jointly written by Guy McCusker, Samson Abramsky and Kohei Honda.

Because of the foundational nature of LICS, impact of work can often take a while to develop, so prizes are awarded for papers published up to 20 years ago. All papers are eligible for the award but only up to three are awarded a prize each year.

The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organisation for the advancement of technology. The annual LICS conference on theoretical and practical topics in computer science is now in its 32nd year.
