Professor of Energy and Environmental Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and University Independent Advisor for Postgraduate Research Students, Marcelle McManus, is one of 100 women from the region to be shortlisted. West Women of the Year was launched in 2018 to recognise the women in the region who continue to champion gender equality. This year’s award ceremony will take place in Bristol at Brunel’s Old Station on 16 May.

Marcelle has been nominated in the Most inspirational woman in STEM in the West 2019 category, which is for “women within the STEM sector who have gone above and beyond to promote women within STEM and can demonstrate personal and professional achievements”. The winner of this category will be chosen by a panel of judges.

However, the overall award for the People's choice award for Woman of the Year is based on the public’s votes. You can vote for Marcelle in the People's Choice poll for Woman of the Year.

As well as being a world-leading authority on renewable technologies, bioenergy, life cycle assessment and sustainable systems, Marcelle is a staunch supporter of advocating diversity in STEM.

As noted in her nomination:

Marcelle’s drive to address global climate challenges is mirrored in her tireless commitment to support, mentor, train and develop the next generation of innovators – particularly upcoming women engineers. She works closely with senior management to improve organisational diversity policies, processes and procedures.

Of her nomination Marcelle said:

To be recognised for my work in this way is a total surprise and I am very pleased and honoured to be included in a list of such amazing and inspiring people. I’m very much looking forward to learning from others on the list when I meet them at the awards ceremony in May.
