Overview

Through the Teaching Development Fund staff from the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team have created a six-week course for undergraduate students on 'Tackling Hate Crime in Higher Education'. Core to our aims is to provide Bath students with an opportunity to develop personal skills relevant to their current context and beyond, through learning about hate crime and discrimination and their impact on groups within higher education. More information on the project is available on the #THCinHE website.

Programme

Each week will hold a compulsory two-hour session (Thursdays, 16.15 to 18.05) split along key themes and skills:

Session 1: Introduction to the course: Power, privilege and systems in Higher Education

Session 2: Social change campaigns and bringing in the bystander

Session 3: Sexual orientation and gender identity

Session 4: Racist and religious hate crime

Session 5: Disability and Intersectionality

Session 6: Workshop to prepare the visual exhibition

The course will be run by Dr Aurelien Mondon (PoLIS), Josh Callander (EDI) and Katy Brown (PoLIS), in coordination with other services and groups across campus and from the local community.

Assessment

Before the course, students will be required to complete the University of Leicester Centre for Hate Studies online training in ‘Tackling Hate Crime in Higher Education’. Each student will receive a certification upon completion.

Halfway through the course, students will be expected to engage with the National Hate Crime Awareness Week and complete a short interactive task.

At the end of the course, students in groups will be required to develop a project based on one of the protected characteristics. Each group will be given a budget and will be responsible for choosing their preferred support to convey a particular message or campaign to a wide audience of students and staff on campus at our exhibition. This could take the form of posters, videos or any other form of material deemed most effective by the students themselves.
