On 8 and 9 July, students from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics (SAMBa) delivered a fantastic third summer conference. Presentations described a range of research from predicting the future of dynamical systems to coexistence in random competition models, and from modelling electromagnetic propagation of multiple in-home devices to making optimal decisions in drug development.
In addition to 27 student speakers, we hosted four invited speakers who gave excellent talks on topics related to statistical applied mathematics. There was also a poster session, giving students the opportunity to talk to conference attendees about their research in greater depth.
We were pleased that many of our partners were able to join us for the conference and are grateful to Novartis, Roche, Dyson and DNV GL for their sponsorship. In addition Moogsoft awarded prizes for the best poster and talk. These were won by Matt Griffith (poster) and Cameron Smith (talk) with Emiko Dupont, Yyanis Johnson-Llambias, Owen Pembery, and Kate Powers highly commended. We were also very excited that two of our Mongolian collaborators were able to join the conference on their way to the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad hosted at the University of Bath.
I spent two incredibly enjoyable and highly informative days at the 2019 SAMBa conference. The cross-disciplinary event was excellent, and in so many ways: the breadth and quality of the research was outstanding, the quality of the presentations and the authority of the students far exceeded my expectations. Well done to everyone involved in SAMBa for such a fantastic conference! I am looking forward to an exciting future as we extend our collaboration over the coming months and years.
