The Government has confirmed that the day of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral, Monday 19 September 2022, will be an additional national bank holiday. The bank holiday will mark the last day of the period of national mourning.

The University has decided to cease most activities and services on that day, to allow as many people as possible to have the opportunity to mark this day as the country commemorates The Queen’s life and reign. This will include closing all hospitality and retail outlets and the Sports Training Village on the day.

Information for staff

With a large estate to keep safe and secure, and essential services which need to operate 24/7, all year round, the University is not able to cease all activity. Managers will work hard to minimise the number of essential staff who are required to work on 19 September. Those staff who do work on this day will be paid under our existing enhanced arrangements for bank holiday working and will keep the extra leave entitlement in iTrent to take leave on another day.

There is no need to revise any leave already booked for 19 September as iTrent is currently being updated for the additional bank holiday and once revised, will not additionally count annual leave already booked on this day.

This recalculation will be completed in iTrent by the morning of Wednesday 14 September and iTrent will simultaneously add in the additional leave entitlement (pro rata if part-time) for the extra bank holiday and take off the time taken for those taking leave. For those part-time staff who do not work on Mondays, this will mean that a pro-rata increase will be added to their leave entitlement in iTrent.

Please speak to your line manager if you have any queries on this matter. Managers should raise any queries that they have with their HR contact.

Information for students

Catering outlets on campus will be closed on Monday 19 September, but the usual outlets (the Fresh shop, Lime tree and Sports café) will be open on Sunday 18 September for you to get supplies. Please see our food outlet opening hours.

Students can still access our University Wellbeing Services which operate every day of the year. Additionally, you can contact our ‘Be Well, Talk Now’ service which also offers support by phone or online chat 24 hours a day.

Our Library will be open as usual.

Watching the State Funeral on campus

There will be an opportunity to watch the State Funeral on campus, for those members of our community who are present on Monday and wish to do so.

The Chaplaincy will offer a short reflection and prayer at 7am and a 15-minute service at 10am.

The funeral will then be livestreamed on the Chaplaincy screen and in University Hall from 10am.
