It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the untimely death of Shahid Perwez. Our thoughts and deep condolences are with his wife, Neha, their 3 young children, Shahid’s family and his colleagues at M-Cril. Shahid was very much part of the CDS family, being holder of the first CDS post-doctoral fellowship between 2012 and 2014.

After studies at the Aligarh Muslim University in India, Shahid spent 15 years in the UK as a researcher and teacher at the Universities of Bath, Durham, Warwick and Edinburgh before returning to India and quickly rising to the position of head of research and evaluation for the consultancy, M-Cril. His research as an anthropologist focused on women, (girl) children and social disadvantage, and his publications ranged across gender, caste, religion, health, social mobilisation and development. Shahid was a bridge across many divides, including between North and South in India, the UK and globally.

Professor James Copestake, said "We will remember Shahid fondly for his ability to wax eloquently and insightfully on many topics, for his enthusiasm, his integrity and his gently unassuming approach to work and colleagues."

An educational memorial fund is being set up in Shahid's name. The fund will be based in India and will be managed by Directors from India and the UK. If you would like to donate, a Go Fund Me has been set up to collate donations from the UK.

A Memorial Event is planned for 27th May 2021 on Zoom at:

  • 6.30 pm India time
  • 9 00 pm Malaysia
  • 2 pm UK
  • 9 am Toronto

It will be an opportunity to share anecdotes and remembrances. If you would like details of the event, then please email CDS@bath.ac.uk and we will forward more information once it is available.
