The University is saddened to announce the death of Martin Goater, Mechanical Services Workshop & Laboratory Technician, who passed away on 25 September 2021.

Martin joined the University in October 2012, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the field of hydraulics. Given his expertise in this area, he was employed as a technician in the Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control (CPTMC). Based in 8 East building in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, he provided technical advice and manufacturing support to members of our academic and research community. In February 2019, Martin started working at the Aerospace and Composites laboratories where, once again, he provided invaluable support to staff and students. Over and above his “day job”, Martin was seconded twice a week to a student workshop, where he was one of a team of technicians who taught our undergraduate students how to use machine tools, including lathes, milling machines and pillar drills.

Julian Sulley, Director of Technical Services in the Faculty of Engineering & Design, said: “Martin was a highly skilled technician, very well-respected by both staff, fellow technicians and students but above all, he was a gentleman and a much-valued member of the technical team. He will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing and working with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Martin’s wife, Beth, daughter Libby and the wider family at this time.”

Martin’s funeral will be held on Saturday 23 October 2021 at St. Nicholas Church, Winsley at 1pm, followed by a private burial at Winsley cemetery for family only.

We know that Martin’s death will affect fellow colleagues and friends and a range of support is available for our staff and students:
