We're delighted to announce that Joe Devine (appointed Associate PVC Research (Doctoral)), Rachel Arnold (appointed Academic Director (Doctoral)) and Shyeni Paul (appointed Director of Doctoral College Operations) will be joining the Doctoral College leadership team in three newly created roles.

Professor Joe Devine has taken on The Associate PVC Research (Doctoral) role, working with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) to assist with providing direction and leadership for Doctoral Research so as to support the University with fulfilment of its strategic research ambitions through doctoral provision. This will include devising and implementing a strategy for doctoral research degree provision across all Faculties and the School to enable growth in PGR student numbers, enhance the quality of research degree programmes and improve institutional reputation in the sector.

Joe said: "Developing the researchers of the future is fundamental to the core mission of any university, and the dynamism of a doctoral community makes a huge contribution to the success of a university. I am really looking forward to working with colleagues from across the University to continue building a supportive environment that allows our doctoral researchers to challenge themselves and create new and impactful knowledge."

Professor Joe Devine will be supported to deliver the duties above by Dr Rachel Arnold, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health, who is now in role as Academic Director (Doctoral). Rachel said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to join the doctoral college leadership team. I am looking forward to working with the doctoral college staff, doctoral students, supervisors, and the broader University community as we look to develop and implement a strategy that strengthens the doctoral provisions and experience at Bath.”

Shyeni Paul will be joining the University of Bath to take up the Director of Doctoral College Operations (DoDCO) role on 27 February. The new role will provide leadership for the University of Bath Doctoral College, alongside the new Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Research (Doctoral). She will manage all professional services support that the university provides to all doctoral students and staff. Reporting to the Director of Education & Student Services and working closely with the Pro-Vice Chancellor (PVC Research) and Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research (Doctoral), she will help to realise the University’s strategic research ambitions through identifying and developing a doctoral strategy and therefore priorities that deliver on that strategy. Shyeni joins us from UKRI, where she has been working as the External Affairs Lead, prior to which she held roles with EPSRC.

Shyeni said: "I'm really looking forward to joining the University of Bath at the end of February. I'm excited to work with my new colleagues to support the University’s doctoral students"

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ian White said: "These three appointments represent a significant investment in our strategic priority to strengthen doctoral provision at the University of Bath, ensuring that PGR students are appropriately supported to realise their potential and actively contribute to the world-class research we pursue."

Please join us in congratulating all three on these exciting new appointments.
