Bath Abbey will once again play host to University of Bath graduation ceremonies, with celebrations taking place through May, June and July.

With in-person graduation ceremonies curtailed over the past two years as a consequence of the pandemic, the ceremonies will recognise the cohorts from 2020 and 2021 who were previously unable to attend in-person events, as well as students graduating this summer.

The University Chancellor, HRH The Earl of Wessex, will be attending some of the ceremonies and eminent experts will receive honorary degrees for their achievements and contribution to society.

On 22 July the University will honour Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert DBE, professor of vaccinology at Oxford University who led the development of the Oxford/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine is credited with saving millions of lives around the world.

Academic, writer and broadcaster Professor Alice Roberts will be awarded an honorary degree on 7 May. Alice Roberts is Professor of Public Engagement with Science at the University of Birmingham and is a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Bath’s Milner Centre for Evolution.

Through May and June, a total of 28 re-scheduled ceremonies will replace those postponed from 2020 and 2021 (to be held on 6-7 May, 10-11 June and 14-16 July), followed by the University’s annual summer award ceremonies from 19-22 July (14 ceremonies).

Ahead of the ceremonies, Professor Cassie Wilson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) said: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming graduates and their families to join us in celebrating the culmination of their studies and their many achievements.

“Given the past two years we have all lived through, and the challenges our students have faced, this year’s ceremonies promise to be a wonderful experience. We’re delighted to be returning to the historic Bath Abbey, which provides a fitting backdrop for such a special event.

“Congratulations to everybody graduating and good luck with the next chapter of your lives.”
