All of our courses are flexible and allow for a wide choice of units after year one.

On some courses you may switch courses during the first year or after the first year.

If you're on the BSc you can switch to the MMath, an excellent preparation for going into research in pure or applied mathematics, or many other subjects that use mathematics.

You'll be able to choose from a wide range of optional units in the areas of pure and applied mathematics, and probability and statistics.

You'll also be able to choose optional units offered by other departments such as:

• Corporate finance
• Accounting
• Science education
• Core physics

With all of our maths courses, you can go on a placement after your second year.

We have links with some of the industry’s leading research institutions and global companies. Recent employers include BAE Systems, Deloitte, Department of Health and Social Care, Lloyds Banking Group, The AA, and Abbott Diabetes Care.

Our specialist placements team offers dedicated support when you're looking for a placement and throughout your placement.

Many of our placements are also paid, so you can earn valuable income to help support your studies.

Most of our teaching staff are heavily engaged in research which means our courses are kept up-to-date and you'll benefit from discussions around the latest thinking in mathematics. It's inspiring to be taught by someone who's an expert in their field.

We divide our research activity into a number of key areas, and we encourage collaboration and mutual support between groups and with other departments.

There are many options for maths graduates, such as working in the financial industry or teaching. A maths degree can also form the basis of a career in technology, for instance working in software development.
