Your future matters to us

From preserving our historic architecture to exploring the future of vehicles, our master's courses cover the breadth and depth of engineering and design disciplines.

Underlying our specialist degrees is the drive to provide a study experience that gives you the skills and knowledge valuable to employers. We've worked with industry to develop our courses to meet the needs of the engineering sector now and for the future. And they are delivered by academics with a wealth of expertise and experience to teach and support you through your MSc.

As well as learning the technical and practical elements of your course, it's also important to us you develop the professional and transferrable skills that will make you more likely to be employed in the career you want. This is why we integrate project work and different ways to engage with industry on your degree. These include placements, guest lectures, industrial mentors, and project work with industrial partners. Your experience in project management and teamwork will help you grow as a strong communicator and confident leader. it also means you'll learn the skills needed to work in a wide range of sectors and not just engineering.

Placements

Our MSc courses with integrated placements provide you with an opportunity to apply your knowledge in industry and prepare you for your career ahead.

Our MSc Modern Building Design includes an integrated placement1 as part of your course, while our MSc Robotics and Autonomous Systems and MSc Artificial Intelligence for Engineering and Design offer optional placement routes.2

On our Modern Building Design and Robotics and Autonomous Systems courses, you can go on placement for three-to-six months after your second semester and it can run parallel with your dissertation allowing you to apply what you've learnt by working on industry-driven research topics.

Benefits

  • our good industry links give you access to a range of placement providers
  • you have the option to base your dissertation on a topic set by your placement company
  • a placement can help reassure your future employers of your professional experience
  • it is an opportunity to build relationships in industry

Where could you go?

Our students have been on placement at companies including:

  • Benedex
  • DF Automation
  • Henriksen Studios
  • Mott McDonald
  • Sonneman Toon Architects

What our students think of placements

Students who go on placement often find that it builds their confidence and they feel more ready to go into industry after they graduate. Play our videos to find out what our students thought about their time on placement.

Consultancy projects

Some of our master's degrees include a consultancy project you'll carry out after the second semester in place of, or as an alternative option to, doing a traditional dissertation.

Our consultancy project (sometimes known as a Practice Track) is a group project where you'll work in teams to solve a real business opportunity or challenge for one of our corporate partners. It gives you experience in creating and managing a brief, running a team project, using cross-functional approaches, and stakeholder management. You’ll also get training in project and client management, and presentation skills.

How do they benefit you?

  • you'll have the opportunity to be mentored by experienced industrial leaders
  • you'll work on a real engineering or technology management challenge in multidisciplinary teams
  • you'll apply the knowledge and behaviour-based skills you have learnt during your studies

What our students think of consultancy projects

We use our links with industry to give you an industry-based alternative to writing a dissertation and to help make you more employable. Play our video to hear from students who carried out a consultancy project on their master's courses.

Vertically integrated projects

Even if your master's doesn't currently include a consultancy project, there are still ways for you to get involved with extra-curricular industry-led projects. Our vertically integrated projects (VIPs) are a chance for you to work in teams with undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students from across the university. You'll work on a real, live project with an academic and often aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. By doing a VIP, you could:

  • make a difference by working towards real impact
  • develop and use the skills thats employers value like collaboration, creativity and communication
  • improve your research skills

Play our video showcase to find out more about VIPs and what our students, staff and involved employers say about them.

2 We will do our best to help you find a placement and guide you through the process; however, we cannot guarantee you a position. If you're unable to secure a placement on our MSc Modern Building Design, you'll transfer on to our 12-month alternative course and will graduate with an MSc in Low-Carbon Building Design. If you're unable to secure a placement on our MSc Robotics and Autonomous Systems, you’ll carry out your individual project earlier during the summer period instead.
