Leadership and Management Apprenticeships

A fantastic development opportunity for those in Team Leader, Supervisor and Management roles.

What you will learn

The Leadership and Management Apprenticeship programme is offered at three levels.


The programme will bring you a number of benefits including:

  • personal development and acquisition of new skills
  • increased understanding of how the role can have a wider positive impact
  • improved skills such as communications, team working and problem solving
  • increase in your confidence, knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed
  • accredited training leading towards a recognised Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) qualification

The apprenticeship programme is currently offered at three levels:

  • Level 3 is for those in new to role, front-line managers who have at least two direct line reports
  • Level 5 is for those in strategic or departmental leadership roles or for manager of managers
  • Level 6 is for those in strategic or departmental leadership roles who would like to work towards Chartered Manager status

How you will learn

Learning is delivered using a variety of methods.


You will learn using the following methods:

  • e-Learning (BUD)
  • virtual classroom sessions
  • support sessions with Learning & Development Practitioner (LDP)
  • formal Reviews with LDP and your Line Manager
  • workplace development activities

Please note this is a rolling programme with enrolment bi-monthly − for example: September, November, January, March, May, July. You will be asked to state your preferred start month in your online request form.


Eligibility criteria

Please read the standard criteria you will need to meet to be considered for the programme. Full eligibility criteria will be reviewed on application.


  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • UK/EU resident for the past three years
  • Contact of employment exceeds the length of the programme
  • Work pattern, a minimum of 16 hours per week
  • In a suitable job role to support the learning programme
  • Does not have an equivalent or higher qualification in the same subject matter

Please also ensure that you can meet the 20% (minimum of six hours per week) off the job learning.


What is needed from you

As well as the commitment to be a positive and enthusiastic role model within the University, there are a number of other requirements needed to join the apprenticeship programme.


To do the apprenticeship programme, you will need to be committed to remain in employment for the duration of the programme.

  • level 3 can take up to 12 months
  • level 5 can take up to 20 months
  • level 6 can take up to 36 months

You need to commit your time, with the support of your line manager, for planned training activity and meet the minimum of six hours a week off-the-job training requirement.

Both Level 3, 5 and 6 are funded by the University through the apprenticeship levy so you or your department will not need to find resource in the budget.

We would like to highlight that if you choose to do the ILM qualification during your apprenticeship, upon completion of the programme, you will be required to make the payment for the ILM annual membership subscription.
