Scholarship kickstart

‘When I first applied to the University, I knew that studying at Bath was not going to be an option for me without a scholarship. This is why I am very grateful for being awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship, which allowed me to leave my home country India and pursue a degree in the UK. Studying the MSc International Development at Bath and taking part in wide range of activities has made my year here truly unforgettable.’

Experiences to cherish

‘There are so many opportunities to develop new interests and get more involved with Bath’s diverse international student community, from sports and cultural events, workshops and conferences, to Students’ Union societies.

‘I have been elected by my coursemates as an Academic Representative and by other students in my hall of residence as Postgraduate Hall Representative, which have given me the chance to get more involved with my department and my peers. Leading several Students’ Union coach trips to places of interest around the UK was also a highlight.’

Reception at Windsor Castle

Abhishek attended a reception organised by the University’s Department of Development & Alumni Relations for students who received bursaries.

‘As a Commonwealth Scholar here at the University I’ve had other opportunities too, such as taking part in the Emerging International Leaders Programme on Freedom of Religion or Belief run by educational charity Cumberland Lodge. As part of the conference, all attendees were invited to the Sunday service on the first Sunday after Easter at the Royal Chapel in Windsor Great Park. When we arrived at the chapel, suddenly there she was, driving by herself, Her Majesty The Queen! She greeted us all and attended the service with us.

‘On another occasion, I was invited to Windsor Castle for a reception organised by the University’s Department of Development & Alumni Relations for students who received bursaries, where I got to meet our Chancellor, the Earl of Wessex.’

Ready for what the future holds

‘I came to Bath with the objective of learning and experiencing as much as I can, and I’ve definitely done that. I feel empowered by the skills and experience I have gained here, and feel ready for the future. For me, that means working with the Government back home in India on policies and programmes, and possibly to go on to serving as a Member of Parliament one day.’

Abhishek’s scholarship was made possible thanks to the support of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and the generosity of our alumni community.
