Betty Fairgrieve grew up in Sunderland where she trained as a teacher. She was first selected to play as a reserve for the national hockey team in 1937. The following year she was part of the All England Women's Hockey Association (AEWHA) team that toured New Zealand and Australia.

The collection mainly comprises scrapbooks, photo albums, diaries, letters and associated memorabilia relating to the tour.

The collection was donated to the University of Bath by Betty Fairgrieve's family in 2019.
