Healthcare for the 21st Century: Using analytics to improve the design and operation of healthcare systems

11 June 2018

Speaker: Professor Margaret Brandeau – Coleman F. Fung Professor of Engineering and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University

Providing effective, affordable, and accessible healthcare is a key challenge of the 21st century. Healthcare costs have been steadily increasing but resources for providing healthcare are limited. At the same time, emerging new technologies and massive amounts of newly available data are changing the landscape of what is possible in healthcare provision.

This talk describes how analytic and computational tools – and, more generally, an analytic way of thinking – can be used to support the design and management of effective and efficient healthcare systems. The Professor has worked with Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford which has had significant impact on improving patient care while reducing costs.

This talk will cover projects in areas relating to hospital operations (operating room scheduling, capacity planning, supply management) and patient care (inpatient monitoring, triage, patient decision making). The talk will conclude with thoughts on challenges and opportunities for applying analytics to improve healthcare now and in the future.

International Healthcare Workshop with Koç University

28–30 July 2017

With support from a British Council/Newton Fund Researcher Links grant, the centre ran an early-career researcher workshop on "Improving healthcare operations through modelling and simulation", which brought together scholars from the UK and Turkey in Bath.

Invited by the School of Management, 25 early career and senior researchers from the UK and Turkey explored innovative decision-making tools to pressing challenges in healthcare planning and management, with a particular focus in applying systems modelling and computer simulation techniques to problems in health and care.

The session was organised by Professor Christos Vasilakis, Director of the Centre for Healthcare Innovation and Improvement (CHI2) at the University of Bath, and his colleagues Profs. Evrim Didem Günes and Lerzan Örmeci at Koç University in Istanbul.

Advancing the role of operational research and analytics in health and care

23 May 2017

Operational research (OR) and advanced analytics, also known as 'the science of better', have been used over a number of decades by industry to improve operations, products and services. Despite a number of successful projects and initiatives with considerable beneficial impact, there is evidence to suggest that health and care organisations have failed to benefit systematically from the use of these methods.

In this event we aim to gather a number of key national experts and stakeholders to review examples of successful local initiatives and discuss developing initiatives aimed at advancing the role and visibility of OR and advanced analytics.
