Cultural Awareness
2pm to 3pm

Cultural Awareness - what does it really mean? Inclusivity is a core value of the Students’ Union. A peer-led workshop that looks at ways to support an understanding of the wider issues and barriers facing minority groups on campus and what solutions can be created to address them.

Our University is a diverse and inclusive community, one where people from different cultures and backgrounds meet. Come to our workshop to broaden your knowledge about diverse communities and take a glimpse into other cultural etiquettes. Book via the SU website.

International Box-Set Club

Join a community watching international box sets alone but together. We have monthly meetings in which we discuss the box set we have watched or try and watch an episode together. The current box set is Deutschland 83. It's also a good way to meet new people and to improve your foreign language skills. Click here to join on Microsoft Teams.

Tuesday 17 November

Developing your intercultural skills: who are we and how can we learn about each other?
1.15pm to 2.05pm

In this live online interactive session from the Skills Centre, we’ll discuss ‘what is culture?’ and we’ll reflect on what happens when you meet someone from a culture that’s different from your own. Suitable for all students, we invite you to come with respect and an open mind, ready to share your experiences and develop key personal and employability skills in learning about yourself and others. Whether you are going on a work or research placement, or just looking to develop your skills from wherever you are, this is the session for you. At the end of this session, you will be able to reflect on how you interact with those from other cultures and you will have action points of what to do differently in future. This is a great follow-on from the Living in a New Culture sessions in induction, but you don’t need to have attended those to get something out of it. The session will be recorded and available on MySkills afterwards. Comments from the chat will be anonymised in our discussions and students can share experiences to the level they feel comfortable. Please note this session is a repeat from the quarantine programme, but you are welcome to attend again. Click here to join the session.

New MS Teams community ‘Chinese Lunch Club’ from the Skills Centre

The Chinese Lunch Club on Microsoft Teams is open to all students and staff who are interested in China and the Chinese language. It is also open to Chinese students who may wish to know more about the British culture and practise their English.

The objective of the club is to create a community where Chinese students and learners of Mandarin Chinese can come together and help each other to better understand each other's culture, to learn, to grow, and to have fun at the same time. The club aims to improve our language and communication skills and to develop our intercultural awareness. In building this online community together, it is hoped that we will feel more connected in the current climate, when many of us are in forced isolation. There are no fixed sessions; you can engage with the club whenever and however suits you. Join the community on Teams.
