Research Computing Teaching Cluster

The Teaching Cluster is used to deliver UG and PG courses and supports final year research projects across campus.

Factsheet

Two University students use a computer and work together on an high performance computing project. They are both wearing casual clothing.
Research Computing is used to solve complex problems in disciplines such as maths, physics, chemistry, engineering and biology.

Using the Teaching Cluster

If you are a University staff member and would like to use the Teaching Cluster, please email rc-support@bath.ac.uk.

Teaching and final year project requests
It is important you let Research Computing know if you need any specific research software, compute power or data storage to deliver your university course or to support UG/PG final year projects. Submit your requirements via our TopDesk form.

Student access
University students attending these two courses will automatically get access to use the cluster:

  • Scientific Computing, Department of Mathematical Sciences
  • Parallel Computing, Department of Computer Science

Teaching Cluster user guides are available on the University Wiki.

Hardware specifications

The Teaching Cluster is hosted on the highly scalable Microsoft Azure platform.

Our cloud environment includes the Azure CycleCloud tool, which makes it easy to configure your workloads.

CycleCloud includes the open source Slurm workload manager.

Storage

  • 256 GB Home storage area allowing users to log in
  • BUCS Home, i.e., the H: drive

Compute

  • HBv2-series VMs with 120 AMD EPYC 7742 processor cores, 4 GB of RAM per CPU core, and no simultaneous multithreading. Each HBv2 VM provides up to 340 GB/sec of memory bandwidth and up to 4 teraFLOPS of FP64 compute

Network fabrics

  • Mellanox EDR InfiniBand (100 Gb/sec or 200 Gb/s depending on the series)
  • VPN from the University to the Azure platform (Bandwidth: 1 Gb/s)

Software environment
