This bursary is for new undergraduate students from the UK who are young adult carers.

You are classed as a young adult carer if you are a carer under 25 who looks after a relative or friend, of any age, due to:

• disability
• chronic or terminal illness
• mental health problems
• alcohol or drug addiction/dependency

To be eligible, you must also:

• be enrolled on a full-time undergraduate or foundation degree and registered as a student at the University of Bath
• started your course here in the 2017/18 academic year or later
• be aged 25 years or under at the start of the course
  
• For the 23/24 academic year, to receive the £500 bursary, students would need to have a household income below £60,000, as assessed by The Student Loans Company.

Students are requested to complete an application form for the Young Adult Carer Bursary and provide explicit third party evidence. This should be in the form of an original letter by a professional person (e.g. teacher/adviser from school/college, GP, social services, or local authority) who is not a family member or the cared for person. This person should normally have known about the situation for a substantial amount of time and can verify that the student has caring responsibilities and for whom they care.

1. The Bursary is worth £500 per academic year of study. Bursaries for eligible students which are given in your placement year are for year-long unpaid or study abroad periods only. Students undertaking a paid placement will not be eligible for the Young Adult Carer Bursary.
2. You cannot be considered for an award if you have not responded to our requests for and provided appropriate proof of your caring responsibilities.
3. Awards cannot be claimed retrospectively for previous academic years.
4. Awards will not normally be terminated nor repayment required on the basis of academic failure.
5. Awards will be paid for one repeat year or part-year only. Students who have more than one year of repeat study, will need to evidence mitigating circumstances in order to be considered for additional support.
6. The University reserves the right to terminate an award and demand repayment of funds already paid in the case of disciplinary action against an award-holder. Cases will be considered on an individual basis by the Director of Student Support.
7. The University reserves the right to withdraw a Bursary from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.
8. The Bursary is paid in one instalment each academic year: normally December. Eligible students will be asked to complete and sign a bank payment form.
9. Please note Student Support may pass on your details to other parties within the University to ensure you receive the appropriate support and advice, if you have any concerns about this please contact us to discuss further.
10. If you suspend your studies then you must notify studentsuccess@bath.ac.uk as soon as possible. The Student Retention & Success Team have the discretion to continue bursary payments while a student is in suspense. This will be decided on a case by case basis.
11. If your situation or status changes during your studies, and this could affect your entitlement to the bursary, you must let the Student Retention & Success Team know as soon as possible via email to studentsuccess@bath.ac.uk.
