A course for staff considering retirement in the next two years, to support you in preparing for the future.

2023/2024 course

This course runs once a year in January.

This course will be delivered on campus as an in-person event.

By listening to expert speakers and through informal discussion, this course aims to give staff considering retirement an opportunity to prepare themselves for their future, so that their new life may be approached with confidence and enthusiasm.

The course includes the following:

  • the theme of retirement
  • wills and trusts
  • state benefits
  • your University pension scheme
  • financial planning
  • investments
  • good health

Morning session

The morning session focuses on planning your finances for retirement. There will be an overview of your LGPS & USS occupational pension and the changes to this scheme.

Planned Future will help you understand the different types of pension plans you may have and relevant taxes. They share planning tips for retirement and beyond and look at the importance of Wills and Power of Attorney. In addition, the opportunity to look at investments and the role of risk in combating inflation, and making your money last for your lifetime.

Afternoon session

The afternoon session is focused on helping you make the most of your freedom in retirement − looking the social and emotional impacts rather than the financial.

Who should attend

This course is suitable for you if you are expecting to retire in the next two years.

Presenters

The course is led by Planned Future and there will also be a representative from the University's Pension team.


Pre-work

Review and complete pre-work for this course.



Free consultation

You will need to attend the event to be provided the option of a free consultation post-course.


Planned Future offer all members of staff who attend the course a free (optional) 90 minute consultation. This will cover financial matters, such as matters involving retirement, redundancy, wills and lasting power of attorney (inheritance tax). The 1:1 consultation can be requested for a later date − there is no time period in place when taking up the opportunity.

Planned Future is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority as Independent Financial Advisers with sister company Chadwicks IFA. Since they are independent, they are able to advise upon the widest possible range of products available from different companies. Any advice given will be generic in nature and not focused on any one company. Participants are under no obligation to follow up any of the advice.

Book or cancel your place using ESS

Discussing your learning and development with your line manager

We assume that if you need permission or agreement to attend this course you will have arranged this before booking.

Your manager will receive an automated notification when you book or cancel a place on a course using ESS.

Book a place

Once a course date has been arranged you can book your place using Employee Self-Service (ESS). You must book a place to be able attend. Download instructions on how to book your place using ESS.

Once you have booked your place on the course, please add the learning commitment to your diary, to ensure you remain available to attend.

As the course is offered once a year, if the course date is yet to be confirmed and you would like to be added to a waiting list, please email staffdev@bath.ac.uk.

Cancel your place

You can cancel your place using Employee Self-Service (ESS). Download instructions on how to cancel your place using ESS.

Please cancel your place as early as possible − and at least three days in advance − to allow others to book instead.
