Changing the design rules for hospitals, Nigel Edwards, CEO of The Nuffield Trust.

A well-known idea in health care improvement is that ‘every system is perfectly designed to get the result it gets’. Therefore, to change the outcomes we have to change the design. Hospitals and healthcare systems are often not well set up to deliver the innovative outcomes that will be needed in future and so we need to identify the design principles that are producing sub-optimal, and highly variable outcomes and re-specify them to fit the goals the system is trying to achieve. This talk will explore a collection of design principles that have been emerging over the last two decades and looks at how they might translate into new approaches to hospital and service planning.

In addition to Nigel's talk, this event will look at how Bath's Centre for Healthcare Innovation and Improvement has helped address the problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Several CHI² affiliated researchers will give short talks on projects they've been involved with, including:

  • supporting the setting up and running of large vaccination centres in the West of England
  • modelling work in support of decisions around critical care capacity in the context of the pandemic (both projects in collaboration with the BNSSG CCG)
  • an HRDUK funded project looking into improving patient flow between acute, community and social care (in collaboration with the BNSSG CCG and the University of Exeter).
  • a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled ‘An Introduction to Innovation in Healthcare’, developed in collaboration with the West of England Academic Health Science Network

CHI² is a multi-disciplinary research centre that aims to solve the practical challenges of health and care systems. It uses a mixed methods approach to tackle research projects, dealing with problems through collaboration and flexibility.
