Allen completed his undergraduate and integrated masters, at the University of Warwick in 2020. Throughout his undergraduate and integrated masters, he has enjoyed working with topics in PDE, inverse problems and machine learning. His Master's project was spent working on applications of deep learning and optimal transport to inverse problems. In his spare time, Allen enjoys watching and playing football, cooking and reading.

Timothy Peters

Timothy finished his Joint Honours degree in Applied Maths and Physics in 2020. During his time at University College Cork he gained an interest in dynamical systems and bifurcation theory. For his final year project, he examined the quantum dot and class A laser equations and how the phenomenon of the Canard explosions was introduced when considering thermal effects. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, playing the piano, board games - the entire spectrum - and ultimate frisbee.

Jenny Power

Jenny graduated from the University of Limerick, Ireland, in 2020, with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics. During her studies, Jenny discovered an interest for inverse problems, waves, and geometrical optics. In the summer between her second and third year, she undertook a summer research project where she focused on geometrical optics, with an application to ultrasound imaging. Her final year project focused on caustics in geometrical optics. In her third year, she completed an 8-month research internship in the High-Tech Campus in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, where she worked in a laser lab on a circuitry printing technique known as LIFT. Outside of her studies, Jenny's main hobbies include Musical Theatre, photography, and watercolour painting.

Seb Scott

Seb graduated from the University of Bath in 2020 with an MMath , where he developed a keen interest in numerical analysis. His Master’s dissertation on “efficient prior conditioning for edge enhancement in imaging” involved the regularisation of discrete ill-posed linear inverse problems. He is looking forward to exploring the topics of both machine learning and data assimilation. Other than maths, Seb also enjoys hiking, watching horror movies, and practicing karate.

Andrei Sontag

Andrei holds a BSc in Physics from the University of São Paulo, and an MSc in Physics from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the São Paulo State University. During his Master's project, he analysed the problem of population dynamics in periodic-forced environments. Looking for further insight, he is investigating the effects of demographic noise in this setting, fostering his curiosity in stochastic effects and programming. He's especially interested in population dynamics, models for evolution, mathematical ecology, epidemiology, complex systems, and the emergent properties of such systems. Outside Maths and Physics, Andrei enjoys learning new languages, reading, cooking, running, and dancing.

Marcel Stozir

Marcel graduated from the University of Cologne in 2020 with a MSc in Mathematics, after completing a BSc degree in Mathematical Economics at the University of Mannheim in 2018 during which he also spent one semester at the University of Florida in 2016. While his research interests in Mannheim solely revolved around the theory of stochastic processes, a subsequent internship at a risk-consultancy firm sparked his fascination of financial mathematics as well as time-series analysis and machine learning. Through his supportive role in concepting and implementing a prediction algorithm of EEX spot market prices for a multinational energy company, he gained crucial modelling expertise for his minor in Informatics in Cologne. There, his dissertation on typical distances in scale-free random networks supported a research group in their analysis of spatial networks. Outside of his studies, Marcel is a passionate tennis player who collects scuba diving and kickboxing trainer licenses.

Fraser Waters

Fraser graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2019 with an MMath degree. In his undergraduate studies he focused on applied mathematical methods and modelling, with particular interests in dynamical systems, perturbation methods, and mathematical biology. Before his final year at Cambridge, he spent the summer collaborating on a project examining how ethical issues can arise from the practice of mathematics, in conjunction with the Cambridge University Ethics in Mathematics project. During his Master’s year, he wrote an essay on finite compartment disease models and the (now somewhat infamous) basic reproductive ratio ‘R_0’. In his spare time, he enjoys reading science- and fantasy-fiction, learning languages, and practising archery.

SAMBa 2020 Aligned Students

Aligned students work on PhD projects generated by SAMBa, or work in close collaboration with the cohort. They are often co-funded by our partners.
