Abigail Phillips Deputy Director (Culture & Inclusion)

Role

In her role as Deputy Director (C&I), Abi is responsible for identifying and implementing actions across the University – from major change programmes to behavioural nudges which define and deliver our University culture. She works with the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Student Experience to create the best possible learning environment with an aim that students emerge from university with a competitive edge. She also collaborates with the Vice-President of Community & Inclusion, aiming to dissolve barriers and tackle institutional issues by listening to the voice of the University community and being honest in our limitations. Abi works with other teams to establish policies, processes and systems designed to be supportive, progressive and underpinned by wellbeing so that our workforce can succeed. One of her key priorities is increasing diversity within the University by attracting and embracing the best talent, be it students or staff, from as diverse a range of backgrounds as possible.

Career

Abi is a highly experienced HR leader with outstanding interpersonal skills. She has held multiple high-profile professional roles which reflect her dedication to HR and her ability to unify and enshrine business policies in complex, ambiguous and business sectors. Abi regularly develops strategies to deliver organisational change by interpreting business strategy, with an analytical and reflective approach that uses considered and structured ways to augment overall team performance. She directly support the Vice-President of Community and Inclusion and the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Student Experience in delivering the Community pillar of the University Strategy and brings a proven track record of successfully delivering change from her 18 years’ experience.

Abi is a self-motivated, resilient and pro-active person who has a real passion for culture change and making a difference by linking strategy objectives to day-to-day operational practice. She believes we should acknowledge specific groups and challenges they face in the wider community, and celebrate the differences of their views to encourage collaboration within our close-knit environment.
