Dr Andrew Ross Elected by Professional Service Staff

Career

Andrew is the Head of Widening Access and Participation in the Directorate of Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach. He is responsible for leading the Access Team delivering targeted outreach in schools and colleges. He is responsible for creating strategies to achieve targets set by the Office for Students and developing relationships across the University and wider sector. Andrew also has responsibility for engaging with services that offer support to target students whilst on-course.

Originally from a deprived area of Derby, Andrew was the first in his family to go to university; he went on to complete a degree and PhD in Chemistry at the University of Sheffield. Andrew has been in outreach since his time in Sheffield where he managed the outreach programme in the Department of Chemistry. He moved to Bristol to take up a science communication and Head of Chemistry role at Explorer Dome in 2012.

Andrew has a passion for helping disadvantaged students achieve their goals and in early 2013 he joined the world of Widening Participation. He has delivered many different projects in several roles at Bath through that time progressing to Science Outreach Manager and subsequently to Head of Widening Access and Participation in 2019. Andrew is well known around the local area for his exciting liquid nitrogen shows and for his Guinness World Record for the fastest time to make ice cream.
