Dr Mark Thomas Laboratory Technician
Mark provides technical support to the Department for Health.
Role
Mark works in the Department for Health laboratories and his duties include:
- equipment and consumables purchase
- laboratory and equipment maintenance
- student supervision and assistance
- acting as a first aider and fire warden
Units taught
Undergraduate
Mark supervises and assists groups of students doing their final year projects in sport and exercise science in the physiology and biochemistry laboratories.
Postgraduate
Mark assists postgraduate students with their project work in the physiology and biochemistry laboratories. He delivers remedial chemistry and biochemistry lectures to postgraduate students and staff.
Career
Mark has worked as a protein chemist, crystallographer, computational chemist and molecular modeller at several universities and in private industry. Most of this work has been in the field of drug discovery, trying to find drugs to treat malaria, various cancers, endometriosis, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. He has to his name forty-nine published peer-reviewed papers (of which seven are reviews), twenty-two posters or meeting abstracts, and five patents.
