Crystal structure of two knob domains, isolated from cow antibodies in complex with complement C5, a drug target for inflammatory diseases, including severe COVID-19

The theme tackles fundamental and applied questions to deliver advances in medical and industrial biotechnology.

Our research ranges from fundamental properties of biomolecules to molecular and metabolic engineering, novel detection and diagnosis methodologies, and therapeutic discovery and design.

The theme develops new products and solutions that we seek to apply, through collaboration and direct commercialisation.

Expertise in the theme includes:

  • chemical, molecular, structural and synthetic biology
  • enzymology
  • biophysics
  • metabolic engineering
  • cell culture in stirred tank and photo-bioreactors
  • X-ray crystallography
  • nuclear magnetic resonance
  • structure-based drug design

We have strong links with other Departments within the University, including Chemistry, Pharmacy & Pharmacology and Physics within the Faculty of Science, and Chemical Engineering and Electronic & Electrical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering & Design. We also have substantial industrial collaborations.

Members of the theme are affiliated with the Centre for Biosensors, Bioelectronics and Biodevices (C3Bio), Centre for Integrated Bioprocessing Research (CIBR), Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CNAN), Centre for Sustainable & Circular Technologies (CSCT), Centre for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI), and Cancer Research at Bath (CR@B) at the University.

Research areas include:

  • biomolecular structure, dynamics and interactions
  • enzyme stability, catalysis, metabolism and engineering
  • biosensing, diagnostics and vaccine development
  • metabolic engineering and synthetic biology
  • peptide library screening for therapeutic discovery
  • inflammation
  • diseases: autoimmune, infectious, neurodegenerative, cancers
