Risk assessment of cryogenic materials

A generic risk assessment for people managing or using cryogenic materials.

The generic risk assessment can be adopted and adapted by departments or research groups or others using cryogenic materials in the course of their work. Line managers and PIs are responsible for ensuring the risk assessment is tailored to reflect the tasks and context in which the work with cryogenic materials will be done.

The Oxygen Depletion Calculator at the end of the risk assessment should be used to calculate the amount of cryogenic material that could be released and the impact on potential users of the space at the time of any release. This information should be used to actively assess the suitability of the proposed location for this work and the required control measures, including any monitoring systems, to be used.
