Venturers Vs The Star, Thursday August 7thAbandoned (rain) Venturers 45/2 (10)It is harder to get to the opposite side of the river. A few of us were there already and it is less difficult in August when the schools are closed, but we did well to start promptly at 6. What delay there was had been caused by there being an H. Singh on both teams, which confused play-cricket. Joji was slightly less reluctant to captain than either Gregory or Bruce: he won the toss and we batted. There were a couple of very wide wides and a ludicrously high full toss; Hemu got dropped off a full toss again; Hemu got dropped by the bowler (Ajay); there was a minor running mixup; Charlie hit one perfect straight drive and soon after hit over a straight one. Vijay drove firmly to cover, who fumbled; he set off, was sent back by Hemu, dived and was convinced he had beated the direct hit. Steve Dent, umpiring, thought he hadn’t. The bat had hit the ground and bounced up: the question is which side of the line it did that. It began to drizzle. Joji treated an over of slow but well-directed legbreaks with respect. The velley disappeared from view. Ajay bowled a maiden. The legspinner demonstrated her googly, and followed it with a proper moon ball that may have slipped from her hand. The rain became heavy. We stopped, covered the pitch and consulted rain apps. They predicted dry weather from 7. At 7 the rain stopped, and some people vanished into the cloud to take the covers off. The rain resumed, and we soon gave up altogether. |
