Venturers Vs Bristol Academicals, Wednesday April 29thAcademicals 173/8 (20), Venturers 68/6 (16)The second fixture of the season proved to be a sharp departure from the friendly village games of years past. Academicals arrived with a revamped lineup and a competitive edge that caught us off guard, turning a social T20 into a high-intensity battle. The match began with a tactical delay as the Academicals waited for half their squad to navigate Bristol traffic, eventually requesting to bat first at 6:00 PM despite Captain Imran’s initial reluctance to bypass a formal toss. Once play commenced in the heavy uplands wind, Imran started with great discipline, but the momentum shifted when debutant Sam struggled with his rhythm, conceding 16 runs in his opening over. This gave the opposition hitters the spark they needed to begin a punishing assault on the bowling attack. Among the early bowlers, debutant Luke stood out as the most economical, while Zuber provided the first breakthrough with a wicket in his opening over. As the innings progressed, Joji was brought into the attack from a difficult end at the captain’s insistence and eventually went for 12 runs. But then found success in the other end with a wicket. Imran also claimed a wicket of his own in his next. Despite the Venturers’ efforts to stem the flow of runs, the Academicals’ opener reached a retired 55, and late strikes from Luke and two final-over wickets from Joji couldn’t prevent a formidable total of 173/8. Our response with the bat started under immense pressure against a quality opening pair who extracted significant swing from the start. The chase faltered early as Zuber fell LBW in the first over and Naveen was lost to a run-out mishap shortly after facing just five balls. The trouble deepened when both Rubbaniy and Josh fell in quick succession, leaving the Venturers reeling at four wickets down against a very strong bowling unit. Joji and Steve then looked to rebuild the innings with a cautious partnership, focusing on singles and occasional boundaries to stabilize the score. However, just as the recovery was gaining ground, Steve was unfortunately run out following a misjudged call from Joji, bringing debutant Luke to the crease. Luke provided a masterclass in defensive resilience, holding his end with textbook technique after a long hiatus from batting. As the light faded to near-unplayable levels, Joji targeted Kamal Singh ((not Venturers Kamal) for a few boundaries before being caught at long-on, after which Sam joined the resistance and immediately cleared the ropes for a massive six. With visibility becoming a safety concern, Imran consulted with the opposition and called the game at the end of 16 overs with the score at 68/6. Although there was a discussion to mark the game as a draw due to the conditions, the opposition ultimately recorded it as a 105-run victory, marking a tough but resilient start to the outdoor T20 campaign. |
