Bath MBA students win top prize for green finance app idea

A team of Bath MBA students have won the Leading Futures 2017 competition external website with their carbon footprint-reducing app idea.

Team Green Finance's app proposal aims to help banking customers to be more environmentally friendly. It does this by rewarding users for investing in green opportunities.

After being shortlisted from 22 teams, they beat five other groups of MBA students from European business schools in the final held in Barcelona. They take away almost £1,800 in prize money.

'The standard of competition was very high and the fact we were selected winners highlights the level of interest in green finance.

'There has been an expression of interest to take the idea forward, which is an exciting prospect and we look forward to exploring and developing every opportunity.'

Investing in a green future

Leading Futures – organised by Banco Sabadell's innovation hub, InnoCells external website – is an annual conference held at ESADE's external website Barcelona campus. InnoCells promote and launch digital finance businesses that use new technology.

Team Green Finance's app idea gives users a 'carbon footprint score' based on their transactions. They can then reduce this by investing in green finance opportunities.

Those with a positive score can sell their carbon credits back to the market.

As well as pitching their idea to a panel of industry experts, Team Green Finance attended workshops with companies such as Google, Business Models Inc. and InnoCells. They then used what they learnt to improve their business plan.
