Cake sale in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

There will be tasty treats and delicious homemade cakes for sale today (Thursday 21 May, 12pm) on the Parade – look for the green table and mountain of cakes!

School for Health staff member, Sarah Moore, is organising the event as part of her fundraising mission as she prepares to get on her bike and cycle across Central America, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 13-day challenge will take place from 21 November to 3 December 2009 and will see Sarah cycle 680 hot, humid kilometres (that's 420 miles), from Panama City to Lake Nicaragua, taking in the beautiful Costa Rican coast along the way.

The route takes the cyclists off the tourist trail through lush rainforests and over rugged coastline and mountains on this epic journey across the varied cultures and terrains of three countries.

Sarah said: “Not only is this challenge going to be hard for me, but standing next to all these amazing cakes today is going to be a challenge in itself! It’s not the ideal training fuel so I am expecting everyone to come and help eat them!”

"I have never done anything like this bike ride in my life. I saw the advert for it in Metro as I was coming up to campus last November and it was a cold, drizzly morning and I wanted to be transported off that bus there and then. Something clicked and I just knew I had to do it.

"I have done a few running events and half marathons before and not taken the time to raise a lot of money for charity so I wanted to finally do my bit and help make a difference to people’s lives affected by cancer."

“I have lost relatives to cancer as well as had scares myself, and I think that is the frightening thing: no-one is exempt from it. I hope to raise much more than £3,300 in sponsorship before I go in November and have been overwhelmed by the incredible support I have already received through people’s donations."

The cake sale is Sarah’s first fundraising event, and even if you don’t want a cake, donations will be welcome.
