Maths student makes national beauty pageant final

A maths student from the University of Bath has made it to the final of this year’s Miss University GB beauty pageant.

Kate Rodger, a 19 year-old second year student, will compete in the final with 18 other students from across Great Britain on Monday 1 March at a night club in Cardiff.

The event is organised in aid of The Joshua Foundation, a charity which provides holidays and experiences for children diagnosed with terminal cancer, and their families.

Contestants are asked to fundraise for the charity before the event, which includes a catwalk show in three rounds featuring evening wear, ‘little black dress’ and swimwear, plus an on-stage interview.

Kate, who is part of the University’s Bath Jets cheerleading squad, said: “I’m quite nervous but really excited. I entered a Miss Cheerleader competition for a bit of a giggle, and found out I’d been put into Miss University. It’s all been entirely accidental and I never thought I had a chance of getting through to the final.

“I’ve only known about the final since the beginning of February so I’m really busy trying to fit in fundraising and publicity with lectures and cheerleading training. I’ve not really had time to think what the final will be like.

“I’ve had some good-natured teasing from friends but they’ve been really supportive and are helping me to fundraise for The Joshua Foundation. It’s an amazing charity so I’m hoping to raise £1,000 through a sponsored 24 hour silence, cake sales and a charity soiree with food and drink and performances by my friends in the cheerleading squad.”

Alison Stallard from The Joshua Foundation said: “This event is a great opportunity for young educated women to show that they not only have brains but beauty as well. The holidays and experiences that we provide are life changing for our families and these fantastically motivated young ladies are helping to make these dreams come true.”

First prize in the competition includes a trip to Lapland with one of the families helped by The Joshua Foundation and a chance to enter to the Miss Universe pageant.
