Death of Derek Nethercote

It is with great regret that we announce the death yesterday (Thursday 18 March) of Derek Nethercote, Computer Technician at the University from 1987 until his retirement on grounds of ill health at the end of October last year.

He leaves a widow, Debbie, and daughter, Emily.

Derek worked in the Department of Education for many years, his post latterly being transferred to BUCS.

He was an active trades unionist, serving as Vice-Chair of the University branch of UNITE, serving on its Regional and National committees, and he played an important part in the development of the University’s Framework Agreement. He served for a period on University Council.

He was hugely respected by his colleagues. Director of BUCS Rod Angood said: "Derek made a very real, and very substantial contribution. His various – often simultaneous - support efforts touched the lives of many."

UNITE Branch Chair Bob Brain and Secretary Wendy Lambson commented: "Derek was the stalwart of our Branch, and his dedication, good humour and sense of fun helped us through the good times and the bad times. We miss him very much."

Contributions to the fund in Derek’s memory, which it is intended will ultimately support his daughter, may be made through the Finance Office Cashier’s Office.

Many of Derek’s former BUCS colleagues took part in the Bath Half Marathon two weeks ago and considerably boosted the fund.

Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
