International Journal of Synthetic Emotions celebrates the completion of its inaugural year

Synthetic emotions are an important subject within computer science, with Professor Phil Willis and Dr Joanna Bryson (on the board for the I.J.S.E.) conducting research in the area of synthetic emotions and Artificial Intelligence.

Mayor of Bath opens new Advice & Representation Centre

On Saturday 6 November the Students’ Union will hold an official opening of its new Advice & Representation Centre (ARC) in the new £5.5m Student Centre. ARC will be opened by Councillor Shaun McGall, Learning & Teaching Development Officer at the University. He has a special history with the Students’ Union, having worked in advice and academic representation from 1999 until 2005.

As a result of past feedback from students, the University has made a substantial investment in the quality of its general teaching rooms, and we are pleased to report that over 60 rooms have been refurbished.

New auto-generated programme mailing lists

From Wednesday 27 October 2010 the auto-generated course mailing lists provided by BUCS now include postgraduate research programmes as well as taught postgraduate programmes. This allows departments to contact research postgraduates on a programme-by-programme basis. Auto-generated course mailing lists are updated daily with information taken from SAMIS.

Students: important info about changes to student loan applications

If you started university before 2009/10, your local authority (LA) is currently responsible for handling your student finance applications. Between November 2010 and March 2011, this will change as every LA in England transfers its student finance responsibilities to Student Finance England.

Take part in student/ staff survey of faith needs

The University is running a survey to help identify whether reasonable religious needs are being met for staff and students. The answers will be used anonymously to inform the review and help make things better. The results of this survey will be considered by the Equalities and Diversity Committee at the next available meeting.

A free public lecture at the University of Bath will explore how The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is using digital media to engage new, global audiences in its science and conservation work (Tuesday 7 December at 6.15pm). 

ACE student commended for 'outstanding' thesis

Nikolaos D Karydis has received the President's Commendation for Outstanding PhD Thesis, 2010, from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Karydis' research, which was conducted in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering and its centre CASA (Centre for Advanced Studies in Architecture), took on the subject of Early Byzantine Vaulted Construction in Churches of the Western Coastal Plains and River Valleys of Asia Minor.
