Bath's student shop wins national award

The student-led enterprise scheme that saw teams of students running a shop for eight days in Bath’s city centre has won an award for outstanding entrepreneurial impact.

Over 50 students took part in the University of Bath competition during last year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week in November, and now organisers of the week have presented the Bath initiative with a 'badge of honour' award.

Andrew Seed, a physics student who project managed the student shop, has also been invited to South Korea to showcase the initiative at a global startup workshop run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this week (March 23-25).

The annual event brings together entrepreneurial leaders, financiers, students and government agents from 60 nations.

Andrew, who is a member of BANTER, the Bath student entrepreneurs’ society, said: “The student shop competition was a fantastic experience and a great way to try out business skills without taking on the real-life risk.

“It’s a real honour to represent Bath’s student enterprise in South Korea and I hope to bring back some great new entrepreneurial ideas. I’ll be keeping a blog at so people back in Bath can share the experience.”

The student shop competition was organised by the Students’ Union in conjunction with Bath & North East Somerset Council. Each team ran a one-day business at 28 Southgate from a £200 start-up fund, with a package of training and expert advice from local business mentors.

Siobain Hone, Student Enterprise Coordinator, said: “All the students that took part in enterprise week enjoyed being part of the local business community for a day and learned valuable practical lessons.”

BANTER is currently looking for a student to project manage this year’s competition in November. They are also recruiting committee members. If you would like to find out more please email BANTER or Andrew Seed.
