Students to celebrate business success

Students will be showcasing their business achievements at a special event to celebrate student enterprise on Tuesday 7 June at Bath’s Holburne Museum.

Student entrepreneur success stories: the Bath Soup Company, Take Note! and Arctic Farm talk about how they got started in business

The SETsquared Showcase of Student Entrepreneurship will feature student businesses and social enterprise projects from across the five universities of the enterprise focused SETsquared partnership: Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey.

Two of our student enterprise success stories that are hoping to have impressed the judges of the evening’s awards are:

  • The Bath Soup Company, founded by Dominic Povey and is now running as a social enterprise, giving local homeless people the opportunity to learn new skills at The Bath Soup School. The weekly soup school produces fresh soup using local ingredients which is sold on campus. Dominic is working with Julian House and The Big Issue Foundation and is hoping to expand the scheme to universities across the UK. The Bath Soup Company sprang from our enterprise competition which gives students the chance to run a business in Bath for one day from an empty shop and has received expert mentoring from Frome-based entrepreneur Gavin Eddy (founder of Forward Space).
  • Take Note! Student Advertising was set up by Nicolas Carey and Yael Fainsilber. They produce free quality note books for students which give businesses a chance to advertise and link to offers and vouchers which students can access on their smartphones. 24,000 notebooks have been distributed to students in Bath and Bristol and Nicolas and Yael are targeting 42 universities with 300,000 notepads in September. The idea was first presented at our business plan competition and mentoring and funding helped to turn it into a fully fledged business. The company developed its own mobile app through our Innovation Centre.

The event is organised by the Students’ Union and Bath graduate start-up consultancy, Vertigo Ventures. Luke Tregidgo, Chair of Bath’s student entrepreneurs’ society, will host the evening and the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glynis Breakwell will introduce the event and its guest speaker, entrepreneur and Bath MBA graduate, Nick Hynes, CEO of leading mobile marketing agency, Somo.

Siobáin Hone, Student Enterprise Coordinator at Bath, said: “It’s a privilege for Bath to host this event, the first of its kind. It’s a great source of pride to celebrate the achievements of our student entrepreneurs, including Take Note! and the Bath Soup Company, both of which are really playing their part to benefit the local economy and community.

“This is an opportunity for students, graduate entrepreneurs and the mentors and professionals who have supported them to come together to share best practice.”
