Student shop 2011: could you come out on top?

The Students’ Union is offering students the chance to run a business for a day from an empty shop in the centre of Bath.

The student shop competition will run from 8 to 18 November, to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week.

So if you were inspired by the success of Bath graduate Tom Pellereau winning this year’s Apprentice, why not give it a go to see if you’ve got what it takes to win the title of Best Student Business?

Student teams will compete against each other, each running their business from a £200 start-up fund, with expert advice from local business mentors.

The team who makes the most profit will win and get to keep their profits. The winners will be announced at the Grand Finale in the Guildhall on Friday 25 November where each team will give a 5 minute presentation demonstrating what they’ve learned about business from the project.

Teams of six students are invited to pitch their ideas to judges on Wednesday 19 and 26 October. Training workshops will then run ahead of the launch in November to help you get your ideas into shape. The grand finale will be held at the Guildhall on 25 November.

Siobain Hone, Student’ Union Enterprise Coordinator, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to try out your entrepreneurial ambitions in a real environment.  You’ll learn about financial strategy, marketing and PR, budgeting and controlling costs as well as the importance of good client relationships.  A massive amount of learning happens during the process and of course it’s great for CVs.”

To enter the competition, student teams need to pitch their ideas to the BANTER student Bath Entrepreneurs on Wednesday 19 and 26 October at the Enterprise Resource Centre in Norwood House. You will be asked to deliver a five minute presentation with clear finance and marketing strategies.

To find out more and register for the event please visit the BANTER website.
