Industrial Action - Wednesday 30 November 2011

Message from Professor Bernie Morley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching)

We have been notified by the University & College Union (UCU) and UNISON that their members at the University of Bath will be taking strike action on Wednesday 30 November 2011.

The UCU action is in support of its dispute about "proposed detrimental changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) and retaining comparable benefits."  The UNISON action is in support of its dispute about changes to Local Government pensions.

It is regrettable that the trades unions have decided to take this action because of the potential for disruption to your studies, but I can assure you that we will be doing all we can to minimise the impact of the industrial action.

Both unions are advising their members that they don’t need to inform us in advance whether they will be participating in strike action.  Some staff may also be affected if local schools are closed.

This makes it difficult to be specific about possible impacts.  Although we currently anticipate that we can mitigate many of these impacts, we are advising all students to be alert for communications from their departments or from other service providers around campus, particularly on the day.

As it’s a Wednesday there will be a full round of BUCS league sporting fixtures in the afternoon and these are planned to take place as normal.
