Rajani Naidoo appointed Professor of Higher Education Management

Rajani Naidoo, from the School of Management, has been appointed Professor of Higher Education Management and Director of the International Centre for Higher Education Management (ICHEM).

Professor Naidoo is a leading researcher in the study of comparative higher education, focusing on transformations in global political economy and organisational change in universities.

Her areas of interest include market competition and new public management; the academic profession; students as consumers; and the contribution of universities to international development and the global public good.

Professor Naidoo will be leading ICHEM, the only UK-based research centre into higher education management located within a business school. It brings together faculty and doctoral students from across the University to research global higher education transformations; the policy and management challenges arising from the current context; and innovative responses for the development of sustainable higher education systems contributing to international development and global wellbeing.

Professor Naidoo has previously been Director of the University’s DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) in Higher Education Management. The programme is located in the Post Experience Education Division of the School of Management and is the only one of its kind worldwide. It combines research excellence with advanced professional practice and attracts students from around the world who hold senior positions within the Higher Education sector.

Professor Naidoo said: “My research indicates that there is a rapid and deep change in international higher education. Evidence-based policies and research based management strategies to steer higher education through these turbulent times have become crucial. In addition, there are growing pressures for higher education managers to gain high level skills leading to a need for postgraduate training. These present excellent opportunities for the School of Management and the University of Bath and I am excited to be leading them.”
Before this appointment, Professor Naidoo, who gained her doctorate from Cambridge, was an inaugural member of a path-breaking institution that acted as a model for a democratic higher education system in post-apartheid South Africa.

She has been appointed as expert advisor to numerous international bodies and has recently been an international reviewer for the Finnish Academy of Science. She is a member of the research and development steering committee of the European Foundation for Management Development and has presented keynotes worldwide.

The Dean of the School of Management, Professor Veronica Hope Hailey, said: “Rajani has an outstanding international reputation within the area of higher education and management. She is also held in high and warm regard by her colleagues. Much of the reputation of the DBA programme is due to Rajani's dedication and commitment to these students over the years.

“I am personally thrilled that she will be leading this area of research and guiding the DBA in partnership with her colleagues within the Post Experience Education division.”
