Student app design winners get set for Silicon Valley

An app designed to help job seekers prepare for psychometric and aptitude testing has taken top prize in this year’s University of Bath’s student Apps Crunch Competition, winning the team a trip to Silicon Valley to meet University alumni working in leading global tech companies.

The Apps Crunch competition is run by the University’s Students’ Union Enterprise Education Office. Workshops and events were run in conjunction with the Bath Digital Festival and the competition was judged by a panel of local tech experts, chaired by Richard Godfrey, CEO at Bath company Rocketmakers, an incubator for tech and new media start-ups.

The Psychometrico team of students (Martin Obretenov, Ventsislav Dimov, and Pritha Shorewalu) are all final year Business Administration students from the School of Management and were inspired to create the app from their personal experience of applying for jobs, and finding that they would have liked more opportunity to practice and prepare for psychometric and aptitude testing.

They will now experience a career-enhancing all-expenses paid week in San Francisco to meet with University alumni working at tech companies including Apple, Facebook, Instagram and Eventbrite.

Martin Obretenov, from the winning team, said: “We could not believe it when we heard we had won. It takes a while for the thought of a trip to San Francisco to sink in! The competition was great and we were grateful for getting to be finalists, but actually winning AppsCrunch is life-changing!

“We learned a lot during the competition on how to do the real thing. Before getting together to work on this none of us had built a wireframe or done an actual pitch. It was a wild ride and we would all do it again!

“We are very happy about the trip and are already working with the University on setting up meetings with some great people in San Francisco. AppsCrunch really helps us to get out there and test ourselves and the prize is fantastic. Our app already has a webpage and we are looking forward to presenting it to alumni in the USA.”

Four teams were selected as finalists:

  • Team Ordo and their app to allow diners to browse, order and pay for food and drinks at restaurants by smartphone
  • Team Jukeboxly and their app to enable party hosts to curate playlists created by their guests
  • Team Whiz and their app to increase one-to-one peer  tutoring on campus
  • Team MixMe and their app to allow users to interactively customise and order cocktails at bars using wireless paymentsMixMe’s poster presentation was selected for the People’s Choice Award and team members Joshua Maynard, Cai Thomas and Dan Williams will attend a reception at St James’ Palace, hosted by the University Chancellor HRH The Earl of Wessex.

Richard Godfrey, Chair of Judges, said: “The Apps Crunch competition is really going from strength to strength based on the entries we received this year. Many of the concepts were more thought through and better presented than we often see at Rocketmakers from more experienced founders, so I have to congratulate the Apps Crunch teams.

“Last year we worked with one of the teams to make their app a reality and with this calibre of entries I really hope we can do something similar again this year.”

The Psychometrico team will travel to San Francisco in early 2015 funded and supported by University alumni based in the United States.
