Saarbrücken seeks our Fairtrade advice

University staff recently hosted a gathering of Fairtrade delegates from Germany, BANES council and Bradford-on-Avon.

The German delegation consisted of representatives from Saarbrücken who are keen to gain Fairtrade accreditation for their town, university and school.

During the breakfast meeting on campus, the delegates shared details of their Fairtrade efforts and future plans.

Liz Eyles, Marketing Manager in Accommodation & Hospitality Services (AHS), said: “All delegates were very interested and pleased to have had the opportunity to ask questions and discover how we do things here at the University of Bath.

”At Saarbrücken they focus on a bottom-up approach and we discussed the potential role of a series of Fairtrade ambassadors across campus. While this isn’t the way we currently do things at Bath, we took on board ideas that we can consider implementing over time."

The group also discussed the importance of accreditation and commitment to the Fairtrade standards.

Su Steenberg, coordinator of the University's Fairtrade Working Group, said: "The University takes its commitment to support, promote and offer Fairtrade products to all students, staff and visitors seriously because as a university, we assign great importance to our role within the wider world.

"We are looking forward to having the opportunity to raise awareness of our 'Fairtrade University' status at a number of events over the next few months - the first of which will be Freshers Week in late September."

After the meeting on campus, the German delegates spent the afternoon visiting a Fairtrade school, church and shop in Bradford-on-Avon before moving on to Bristol for a Fairtrade conference.

Susanne Mohr-Schuhmacher from Saarbrücken said: "Thanks again for taking the time to welcome us. It was a very informative meeting and we took a lot of ideas back to Germany."
