VC's Report to Senate for 16 Nov 2016

1.         League Tables

1.1      Table of Tables
The University was ranked joint 12th in the Times Higher Education ‘Table of Tables’.

2.         International Engagements

2.1       The Chancellor and I hosted a 50th Anniversary reception on 2 October in San Francisco for our alumni and supporters - the largest gathering we have organised in the US. I also visited the University of California San Francisco QB3 business incubator and the Tesla car factory in Fremont, hosted by our Honorary Graduate Gilbert Passin.

2.2       In September and October, as well as hosting the Changeable, Agile, Reconfigurable and Virtual Production (CARV) 2016 conference, the University received visits from the British Council, Yonsei University (South Korea), University of Washington (USA), Zhejiang University (China), Stellenbosch University (South Africa), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Lingnan University (Hong Kong).

2.3       Professor Jonathan Knight took part in a ministerial delegation to China, led by Jo Johnson MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation.  Additionally, representatives from Bath took part in visits to Unicamp (Brazil), Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and Princess Sumaya University of Technology (PSUT) Jordan.

2.4     I hosted a dinner for Prince El Hassan and Princess Sarvath of Jordan on 24 October before the 50th Anniversary celebrations, also including representatives from Education, Social & Policy Sciences, and Architecture & Civil Engineering.

2.5       In November, Professor Peter Lambert will lead a delegation of the University to Jordan. Additionally, Professor Jonathan Knight, accompanied by representatives of all Faculties and School, will take part in the first Universities of four Continents (U4C) workshop, which will take place at Unicamp. U4C is a newly formed international strategic network comprising Bath, Unicamp, Stellenbosch and Zhejiang Universities.

3.         Visits to Departments

Since my last report I have visited Hospitality on 12 October and Sports Development and Recreation on 2 November.

4.         Other University news

I particularly wish to draw the attention of Senate to the following appointments and developments since our previous meeting:

4.1       Professor Carole Mundell has been appointed by Council as Head of Department of Physics from 1 November 2016 to 31 October 2019.
