A former member of the US Special Forces joined the class via Skype.

The speaker brought active experience of working in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and beyond. The presence of this remote participant enabled Bath students to learn first-hand from someone who had come into contact with local populations. The exercise provided valuable insights into both the lives of local people and a number of political and security challenges they continue to face on a daily basis.

The discussion covered a variety of topics concerning South and Central Asia. Some of the key points included the issues of (mis)perceptions causing conflict in Afghanistan, clan and tribal politics in Kazakhstan and the transition to democracy in Kyrgyzstan.
