Chinese family relationships

Most Chinese people have a close relationship with their family. They are always in contact, and help each other throughout life. Grandparents often help to raise grandchildren and share the burden of the young parents who are both employed full-time. For example, they will escort the children to and from school, take care of them at weekends, etc. They regard this as 天伦之乐 (family happiness). Parents dote on their children; they pay for their education, provide accommodation even when the children are over eighteen years old, sometimes buy a flat for them if they have the money; they never expect any form of 'pay back'. Likewise, people take good care of their elderly parents because 孝 (filiality) is regarded as an important moral duty. Those who don't respect such a responsibility are disapproved of by society. Mutual caring between parents and children is a teaching from Confucius and is believed to play an important role in ensuring the stability of society.
