Result indicators

Resultative endings such as (lit. to finish) and (lit. to understand), are attached to action verbs to indicate the result or conclusion of an action.


Resultative endings

Resultative endings are put after action verbs, e.g.

to finish

to finish doing

to finish and to achieve a successful conclusion

to finish writing and have done the work well

to perceive

to hear something

to do wrong

to mishear

to understand

to read and understand something

to stick

to remember

to be enough

to have said enough

to be used to

to be familiar with using something

to attain a goal, to acquire

to buy/to purchase

to be full

to eat until full

to know

to learn and know/be able to do

to open

to pull and open

to use up

to drink up

to decide

to make a decision

Action verbs

了一个声音。I heard a sound.

了。 I'm full. (lit. I ate until full.)

了刀叉吃饭。I am familiar with using a knife and fork to eat.
