Use of 的 to create a noun phrase

is normally used to connect an adjective and a noun, e.g. 一套带家具的房子 a furnished flat. However, it can also be used as the structural particle 'de' to create a noun phrase in which the omitted head noun is obvious from the context. It can then either follow a noun, a pronoun, an adjective, a verb, a verb+object or a subject+verb phrase.

following a noun:

  • 您想租什么地段的What area do you like? (lit. You want to rent | what area 'de'?)

following a pronoun:

  • 这是我的This is mine. (lit. This is | I 'de'.)

following an adjective:

  • 那个地方没什么好玩的There is nothing interesting in that place. (lit. That place has not interesting 'de'.)

following a verb:

  • 我们现在挂牌的就有好几套。We have got quite a few on our books currently. (lit. We currently | list 'de' | has quite a few.)

following a verb+object:

  • 有什么可以帮您的吗?How can I help? (lit. Is there (I) can | help you 'de'?)

following a subject+verb phrase:

  • 我在这里住了一辈子,没有什么是我没见过的I have lived here for my whole life, there is nothing that I haven’t seen. (lit. There is not | I have not seen 'de'.)
