Hainan Island, the 'Oriental Hawaii'
Hainan Island 海南岛 is part of Hainan province 海南省 , which is the most southern province of China. It occupies an area of about 4,000 square kilometres and has a population of close to 8 million people. It benefits from pleasant weather conditions, beautiful beaches, and a blossoming flora. Visitors can enjoy delicious fresh seafood, and participate in a wide range of activities and events throughout the year. The annual average temperature is between 22° and 26°C; it never drops below 19 °C even in the coldest winter. Its pleasant climate and stunning natural scenery won Hainan the name of 'Oriental Hawaii' 东方夏威夷.
One of the most popular tourist sites on Hainan Island is called 天涯海角, which literally means 'the edge of the sky and the corner of the sea'. Here, giant rocks stand against the background of a deep blue undulating sea. In ancient times, the island was almost inaccessible due to the lack of transportation. It served as a place of exile where insurgents, disgraced officials, or criminals were sent for punishment. Nowadays, Hainan has become such a popular place that people regard it as one of the most romantic venues to exchange marriage vows.
