Use of 过
过, when used as an aspect particle, has no English equivalent. Its main function is to indicate a past experience.
我去过北京。I have been to Beijing.
莉莉以前在北京工作过。Lilly has worked in Beijing before.
你住在北京的时候去过吗?Did you go there when you lived in Beijing?
The experience indicated by 过 can refer to a specified period: 'when you lived in Beijing', 'before'.
To negate verbs when using 过, put 没(有) before the verb. 从(来) 'in the past' can also be put before the verb for additional emphasis, stressing that something has never been experienced before.
我只在书上读过,从没见过真的。 I have only read about them in books, but have never seen them with my own eyes.
中国的很多地方我都没有去过。There are many places in China that I have not been to.
