Modal verbs used to indicate interdiction include the following:
请不要在房间里吸烟。Please don't smoke in the room. 别着急,我们想想办法。Don't worry, we'll think about some solutions.
这里不可以停车。 You cannot park here. 酒后不能开车。You cannot drive after drinking.
这不是我的错,你不应该怪我。This is not my fault, you should not blame me.
开会的时候不允许使用手机。Mobiles phones are not allowed during meetings. |
Modal verbs used on public signs

Modal verbs used on public signs to indicate prohibited activities:
机动车不得入园。No vehicles in the park. (lit. vehicles cannot enter the park)
不准大声喧哗。No shouting. (lit. Shouting is not allowed)
禁止吸烟。No smoking. (lit. Smoking is forbidden)
严禁赌博。No gambling. (lit. Gambling is strictly prohibited) |
Note that these verbs are put directly before the expression describing the activity.
