Traditional Chinese medical treatments

Traditional Chinese Medicine centres on the belief in and the understanding of 'qi' or energy flow, which is an active principle forming part of the living body. If 'qi' circulates well in the body, then one is healthy and vigorous. If 'qi' is blocked, then the body suffers from some malfunction and one feels unwell. The following traditional Chinese medical treatments all aim to aid or resume the successful circulation of 'qi'.

Acupuncture 针灸 treats people by inserting and manipulating needles at specific points in the body. 'Qi' circulates in the body through a system of channels called meridians, connecting certain organs and functions. Inserting needles at relevant points helps relieve blockages and aids the circulation of 'qi'.

Skinscraping 刮痧 treats people by using a scraper made of ox horn or jade on their back until capillaries become dilated and release toxins. The treatment stimulates the sweat glands and increases blood circulation. It's used to treat all kinds of illnesses including fevers, insomnia or back pain; but can also be used simply to aid the good circulation of 'qi' and keep healthy.

The use of cupping glasses 拔火罐 relies upon the production of local suction on the skin to concentrate the blood flow and promote healing. The cupping glass is first heated, then applied to the skin to form an air-tight seal. As the air inside the cup cools, it contracts thus forming a partial vacuum, enabling the cup to suck in the skin, pulling in soft tissue, and drawing blood to the area. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, it can clear blood and nerve channels and help the smooth circulation of 'qi', blood and other fluids.
